Fifteen-year-old Sakia Gunn was stabbed to death in Newark 20 years ago. The death of the young Black lesbian became a flashpoint for Newark’s LGBTQ community. On Saturday, a section of Halsey Street in Newark was renamed Sakia Gunn Way in her honor.

Gunn’s best friend Valencia Bailey, who held Gunn in her arms as she died, said, “With this sign, your name will forever be on this earth.”

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, whose gay sister Shani Baraka was killed alongside her partner in a domestic dispute a few months after the death of Gunn, said the street sign is important but education about LGBTQ people in Newark is key.

“At the end of the day, we just have to do a better job explaining to our young people the history of the things that go on in our city,” Baraka said.
