Plainclothes officers in Newark must wear body cameras. The mayor and public safety director say officers will do so immediately.
This follows the New Year’s Day shooting and killing of an unarmed man during a police investigation of a residential neighborhood shooting. A video of the incident shows a detective and the man running into each other and the detective shooting the man as both fall to the ground. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating.
The new policy has some exceptions for officers assigned to work with state and federal agencies. Officers on surveillance duties must wear the body cameras during an arrest and officers must be approved to not wear one. The Newark public safety director Anthony Ambrose said the policy marks another step in building trust and transparency with the people that officers serve.
Ambrose, who has announced he is retiring after 34 years, said his successor will have a lot of work to do but that fire, police and emergency management services are in better shape than when he took them over five years ago.
