Newark’s Guaranteed Income pilot program promises $6,000 a year, paid over two years, to 30 residents — no strings attached. Recipients must be at least 18 years old with an income that’s 200% below the federal poverty threshold.
“We believe that the system endemically creates poverty and people who live in poverty, and we need this an opportunity to offset that,” said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Funded with $2.2 million in private donations, the program has enough money to fund additional applicants come July.
