The state is launching a pilot program to help young people transition back into their communities after being incarcerated; the pilot program also will be aimed at preventing their involvement with the criminal justice system in the first place.
While Gov. Phil Murphy is abroad on vacation with his family, Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver signed the legislation for the pilot program Wednesday. The program, which will operate under the Juvenile Justice Commission and target four cities — Camden, Newark, Trenton and Paterson — will create so-called restorative justice hubs, or spaces where young people and their families can get counseling to build their relationships and resolve conflicts. The program will also include services that provide social support, help finding a job, and mentorship.
