Officials and community members Monday celebrated the grand opening of Hoboken’s resiliency park. To mitigate flooding from torrential downpours, the 5-acre recreational and public space integrates green infrastructure and innovative stormwater management as part of Hoboken’s overall resiliency strategy.

The state’s largest such park, ResilienCity Park will include a multipurpose athletic field, playground, open lawn space, performing stage and a basketball court that also serves as a stormwater detention basin. The park will be able to hold up to 2 million gallons of stormwater and include a pumping station to release water.

The park was designed with an underground storage system that collects water from plants and gardens throughout the park, and through porous surfaces where rainwater drains into underground storage basins. The concept for the park came about after Superstorm Sandy ravaged Hoboken. The design also mitigates the harmful impact of floodwater going back into the Hudson River, by treating the water before it’s pumped out.

The park is intended to improve the community, with recreational ball fields, kids’ play areas and more open green space in Hoboken.
