Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday signed a law that aims to crack down on gun traffickers. The measure, which state lawmakers passed unanimously in June, creates new criminal penalties for gun-trafficking in cases where a trafficked firearm was later used to kill or harm a person.
Under the new law, a person who commits a firearm trafficking violation that results in a death would be guilty of a first-degree crime, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. A person convicted of gun trafficking in a case that involved a shooting injury would be guilty of a second-degree crime and face up to 10 years in prison.
