Uyen Khuong, the founder and executive director of Action Together New Jersey, speaks with NJ Spotlight News about a new push to end New Jersey’s controversial “party line” ballot design.

New Jersey is the only state that employs the party line design for its primaries, where the candidate endorsed by the county leadership gets top billing on the voter’s ballot. It has long drawn the ire of political groups outside of the state’s political establishment who contend the design allows Democratic and Republican party leaders to group their preferred candidates together on a ballot, while pushing challengers aside.

Khuong said there is an unprecedented chance to seize public attention on the issue as the state heads towards a heated Democratic primary in next year’s race for U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s (D-NJ) seat.

“We’re using this unique opportunity to really get out and, one, educate voters about how they can vote and not have to vote down the line,” Khuong said. “And secondly, to really get rid of the line and go with an office-block display, just like all other states in the nation.”
