Advocates are applauding new legislation that would allow New Jerseyans who are autistic or those who have a communication disorder to request their diagnosis be listed on their driver’s license or state identification. Gov. Phil Murphy signed the measure into law this week after receiving bipartisan approval in both the Assembly and Senate.

“If you’ve ever been stopped, you know how stressful that situation is. Now add to it, someone who gets nervous or doesn’t understand cues or has difficulty communicating or just simply following direction. It’s a very difficult situation,” said Tracy Noble, spokesperson for AAA-Mid Atlantic.

“Anytime there’s interaction with law enforcement, first impressions are absolutely critical. And sometimes individuals with autism and their symptoms may look like something suspicious,” said Suzanne Buchanan, executive director of Autism New Jersey.
