New Jersey City University is slashing its budget and teaching staff. In response to a budget deficit of $12 million, the school is also cutting 37% of its academic programs. The layoff of 30 teachers has been announced along with the ending of 48 undergrad programs, 28 graduate programs and more. NJCU’s Board Chair Joseph Scott called the announcement “a difficult but necessary next step towards the long-term sustainability of the university mission.”
The school, an underwriter of NJ Spotlight News, had already cut programs to save around $10 million last year. With all the cuts, the university is prepared to see its student enrollment fall from around 8,000 to around 5,000.
