The Assembly Judiciary Committee has approved a package of gun safety bills backed by Gov. Phil Murphy. These include measures to require firearm safety training and mandate safe storage of guns.
While Speaker Craig Coughlin has supported putting the bills up for a vote in the full Assembly, it’s not clear whether outgoing Senate President Steve Sweeney will post the bills in his chamber. Sweeney has said he supports some but not all of the bills, and that he wants legislation focused on guns used in crimes that make their way into the state illegally. Murphy says while New Jersey is the strongest state in the U.S. for gun safety, there is still too much gun crime.
