Residents of Nashville, Tennessee will gather Wednesday night for a vigil mourning the three children and three adults killed by a mass shooter at a private Christian school on Monday. Police say the shooting rampage was carried out by a 28-year-old assailant under care for an emotional disorder, heavily armed with guns that had been legally purchased.
The massacre is among 130 mass shootings this year alone in the U.S., as federal data shows that gun violence is the leading cause of death among young children in America. Michael Anestis, executive director of the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center, discusses the continuing onslaught of such attacks, their wide-ranging impacts and the response to them. The attacks became a public health emergency long before now, Anestis said — “The solutions have to be, what can we do to lower the risk that is currently way above the levels that I think any of us are comfortable with.”
