Gov. Phil Murphy’s term as chair of the National Governors Association ended Friday. Murphy passed the gavel to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican. Cox said his mission — something expected of all incoming chairpersons — will be to focus on political polarization and to create a more civil climate of discourse.
“The course that we are on right now as Americans is unsustainable in an increasingly fragile democracy, that we can’t long remain a United States if this continues,” Cox said.
Cox and his vice chair, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, unveiled a video they plan to distribute nationally as part of the initiative.
“A video like the one Jared and I did actually was very effective in lowering the animosity people felt towards the other party when they saw two members of different parties together,” Cox said.
