Gov. Phil Murphy will announce new legislation this week that would compel insurance companies to provide coverage for abortions, according to a source familiar with the governor’s plans. Even though Murphy signed the Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act, codifying abortion rights, the law did not include mandatory insurance coverage provisions, because reluctant lawmakers had stripped those out of the original bill.

Activists say medical costs remain a hurdle to abortion health-care for many. “I felt backed up against a wall. I felt there weren’t other options,” said one South Jersey woman who struggled to pay for an abortion ten years ago. The U.S. Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, the decision that legalized abortion 49 years ago in the U.S. With the fall of Roe about to send out-of-state patients seeking abortions to New Jersey, providers say cost remains a big hurdle.
