Gov. Phil Murphy joined with state education leaders in Montgomery Township on Thursday to announce his proposed education funding plan for the upcoming fiscal year.

“Here in Montgomery Township, state aid is going to increase by more than $1 million, a more than 15 percent increase from this current year,” Murphy said, adding, “Looking back to where Montgomery Township schools were in my first year as governor, we will have so far increased funding for the district by 84 percent.”

Not all school districts in the state got such good news. Many stand to lose millions of dollars at a time when they’re already facing teacher shortages, reductions in programs, along with other challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state Department of Education on Thursday released information on the funding amounts each district will receive in the next fiscal year. The amounts are based on the School Funding Formula, a plan aimed at more equitably distributing school aid in the state.
