Gov. Phil Murphy addressed state lawmakers on Tuesday to lay out his vision for New Jersey’s next state budget: a $55.9 billion plan that keeps overall spending roughly in line with inflation, while placing a focus on funding public schools and expanding affordability programs.

A key feature in the proposal is a plan to tax the state’s largest businesses in order to help fund NJ Transit.

Murphy’s budget proposal also includes investments to fight food insecurity, developing the teacher and nurse workforces, assisting homeless veterans, expanding addiction services and keeping the state committed to the offshore wind industry.
