On Saturday, former President Barack Obama joined Gov. Phil Murphy at a get-out-the-vote effort in Newark. On Monday, with just eight days until Election Day, President Joe Biden was in New Jersey on a visit that was part politics, part policy. Just as Gov. Phil Murphy is looking for a win on Nov. 2, Biden needs a win, too — an infrastructure bill, with money for mass-transit project funding for New Jersey, hangs in the balance, and if he can help Murphy, all the better.
Biden started the day with a tour of a preschool in North Plainfield to make a pitch for his “Build Back Better” social spending plan, which would make two years of pre-K available to every child. He then attended a groundbreaking for the $1.6 billion Portal North Bridge replacement, part of the Gateway Project that will build new rail tunnels under the Hudson River.
