State Democrats and Republicans are sparring over a new curriculum for teaching sex education in public schools. It puts the topic front and center in a national culture war over exactly what students learn about sexual health —and when. The backlash erupted after a local school board released sample documents that teachers can use when creating their lesson plans.
The flareup prompted Gov. Phil Murphy to order a review of the standards —adding fuel to the controversy. Kate Okeson, founder of Make it Better For Youth, which helps to build community among LGBTQ kids, supports the governor’s announcement. She says encouraging open, fact-based dialogue helps everyone. But all do not share that sentiment.
