It was a difficult weekend for many New Jerseyans trying access the state’s website for unemployment benefits. The system went down on Sunday morning. By Monday morning it was back up, and the state is extending this week’s schedule for benefits certification to help those who were unable to certify over the weekend.

Meantime, there’s no word yet on when the state will begin processing claims for gig workers and independent contractors under a new federal unemployment benefits program. But the federal government has now provided states with guidance on the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program — the last step needed before the processing could begin.

As of Monday morning, banks and other lenders began accepting applications from small businesses and nonprofits looking to get in on the next round of SBA funding through the Paycheck Protection Program. But already there is concern the program could quickly run out of money again.
