The Montclair Public Library offers more than just books; it’s now one of six libraries in New Jersey to include a licensed social worker on staff.

As the library’s part-time licensed social worker, Mia Boxer helps library patrons connect to various resources while creating a safe space to talk. Patrons can schedule a one-on-one visit in advance or meet with Boxer on a first-come, first-served basis.

“I think libraries are very special places, they don’t hold stigma against people,” Boxer said.

“It’s really the perfect place to have a social worker, because people are coming in and out all the time,” said Selwa Shamy, assistant director of Montclair Public Library. She said the library “put together a binder of services but sometimes people just really need that professional help,”
