Just four days remain before the deadline to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan. On Friday, the White House said the military will need to work with the Taliban to evacuate anyone still left there after that deadline, despite a lack of trust for the group. Flights have resumed out of Kabul airport, with 12,500 people — including 300 Americans — evacuated on U.S. military and coalition flights in the last 24 hours.
The Department of Defense authorized three more U.S. military installations to help in the effort, bringing the total to seven. Gov. Phil Murphy established the Task Force on Afghan Refugee Assistance to coordinate state efforts out of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, where close to 1,200 refugees are already being housed.
