Democratic gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th) is calling for a federal investigation after learning that her entire military file, including private personal information, was released to Nicholas DeGregorio, a political ally of Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli. The military files included Sherrill’s social security number, insurance information and other private details.

In a letter to the chairmen of the Armed Services, Oversight, and Veterans’ Affairs committees, all members of New Jersey’s Democratic congressional delegation stood with Sherrill in demanding an immediate investigation into the matter.

Sherrill says the request to access the files was unlawfully approved by an employee at the National Archives and Records Administration. She’s accusing the Trump administration and Ciattarelli’s campaign of weaponizing her personal information for political gain, saying if her records are not safe, then no veteran’s records are. Following the release, the National Archives and Records Administration sent a letter to Sherrill admitting their fault in the process.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey GOP has accused Sherrill of being implicated in a cheating scandal while at the Naval Academy. In a letter posted to X, the NJ GOP stated, “While we respect her service, Rep. Sherrill is now running for governor and owes the people of our state full transparency as it relates to the Navy investigation into her role in the scandal and the complete findings of that investigation… She can provide that by authorizing the release of all academic and disciplinary records from her time at the Academy.”

Sherrill’s graduating class included about 130 midshipmen tied up in a cheating scandal, which Sherrill says she wasn’t a part of, but rather was barred from walking because she refused to name classmates involved. She has refused the NJ GOP’s request to release her records, and says she “graduated and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy, serving for nearly ten years with the highest level of distinction and honor.”
