The corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) resumed Monday, with Menendez’s defense team taking center stage as it tried to poke holes in the meticulous timeline of texts, calls and meetings the prosecution laid out last week.
With the details in that timeline, prosecutors sought to make a connection between the case’s infamous gold bars and actions by Menendez on behalf of his co-defendant Fred Daibes.
The defense Monday argued it was Nadine Menendez, the senator’s wife, who received the gifts and was the key point of contact for Daibes.
Two key witnesses were on the stand Monday — FBI Special Agent Paul VanWhy and Sarah Arkin, a Senate Foreign Relations Committee staffer.
