LaMonica McIver won Tuesday’s Democratic primary in the 10th Congressional District. She secured nearly half of the votes in a race that saw 11 Democrats vying to be the nominee in the upcoming special election on Sept. 18. Her message to voters, she says, is that she’s there for them.

“I believe voters should vote for me because I’m a leader that they can depend on. A true advocate that is going to stand for them when it’s good, when it’s bad, when it’s ugly, all the above. And that’s why they should support me. That’s why many supported me last night,” said McIver.

The special election will put the winner in Payne’s seat until the end of this term, on Jan 3. The election to fill the next two-year term will be held in November, and Democratic party leaders will appoint the candidate to run in that election. McIver has been considered the favorite for that appointment.

“We’ve have been in conversation with many Democratic district leaders across the NJ-10 over these last eight weeks, but we don’t take anything for granted. I don’t take anything for granted. And we’re hoping, you know, that tomorrow is definitely successful for me to be on the November ballot,” says McIver.
