Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop joined the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Phillip Sellinger and city police leaders on Monday to tout dropping crime rates in the state’s second-largest city.

Homicides, in particular, are down to historic lows, Fulop said. A stabbing death over the weekend was just the 10th homicide in Jersey City this year. Despite minor statistical increases in robberies and aggravated assaults, Fulop said his administration’s multipronged approach of enforcement, detective work and partnerships is getting results.

People looking to independently verify those trends will have to take law enforcement’s word for it as the state hasn’t posted complete uniform crime reports online since 2020.

“Crime does not decrease in a straight line. It goes up. It goes down week to week. I think this gives you the best picture overall of what crime looks like in Jersey City,” Fulop said.
