Roughly 100 senior medical students from Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine on Friday participated in its Match Day, the celebrated moment when graduating students learn where they will be doing their medical residencies. The eager doctors-to-be gathered at MetLife Stadium and opened black sealed envelopes with their destinations, revealing the start of their careers.
About half of the placements revealed Friday were at Hackensack Meridian hospitals.
“I’ve been focusing on going into orthopedic surgery,” said student Nicholas Cozzarelli. “And I’m very fortunate that on Monday I received a notification that I did match into orthopedic surgery. And now today, I’m looking forward to finding out where are we spending the next five years.”
Another student Monifa King said she wanted to be a doctor since she was a young girl.
“I honestly can’t believe it,” she said Friday. “I have to pinch myself to think that all the hard work came to this day… I’m going to be a doctor, and I’m going to care for communities that look like mine. It’s amazing.”
