Chaos in Wildwood over the weekend turned deadly, after a pop-up car rally drew more than 500 vehicles to meet up in the Shore town and spiraled out of control. A 37-year-old man is charged with the deaths of two people as a result of a car crash during the H20i rally, that killed a passenger in the car he hit and a pedestrian when the car veered onto the sidewalk.

State Sen. Mike Testa (R-Cape May) is calling for the governor to intervene and for the Murphy administration to work with legislators and local officials to develop a plan that helps towns respond to massive pop-up parties. The request comes after other Republican lawmakers this summer said they were worried about public safety in light of other pop-up parties at the Shore, arguing that small towns aren’t equipped to handle sudden, mass crowds. Lawmakers are proposing a task force made up of the state police, along with county and local law enforcement. The Murphy administration hasn’t commented on the proposal.
