Lawmakers look help casinos with plan that lets them make payments instead of paying property taxes

Bill that would give AC casinos tax breaks passes Assembly committee vote

A bill that would enact tax breaks for Atlantic City’s casinos has advanced out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.  The so-called PILOT bill allows casinos to make payments in lieu of property taxes to Atlantic City.  The bill has some key support — as the head of the Atlantic City’s casino workers union, Unite Here Local 54 — is backing it.

Outgoing state Senate President Steve Sweeney has said casinos have told him that four of the nine gambling houses are in danger of going out of business if the tax relief bill does not pass.  The PILOT bill still needs to be passed by the full Senate and Assembly.
