For many young adults, going to college is the start of an exciting chapter in their lives. But it’s also a time when students are faced with new challenges that can be overwhelming for some and lead to mental health concerns. State lawmakers are trying to tackle this issue.
Last week, the Assembly approved three bills that would help create better access to mental health treatment for young adults. One of them, the College Mental Health Services Act, would provide public universities with grants to cut down on wait times for students who need services. It would also help employ more mental health counselors and therapists.
Another of the bills would allow school counselors to refer high school and middle school students to private professional counselors.
