Outraged senators from both sides of the aisle are demanding substantive corrections at New Jersey’s state-run Menlo Park veterans home after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services stopped paying for new admissions there on Nov. 22. CMS cited a summer inspection outlining serious abuse and safety violations that placed residents in “immediate jeopardy.”

“Now no one’s being admitted. We’ve got to fix it,” said Sen. Patrick Diegnan (D-Middlesex). “Let’s get folks in there that are experienced, know what they’re doing, and get this facility back where it should be.”

The governor’s office said late Monday, “The administrator and nurse consultant have been on-site since last week and continue to collaborate with the facility leaders and staff to improve quality of care through mentoring, coaching and sharing of operational and clinical best practices. The Team is evaluating processes such as survey history, staffing data, Quality Measures, Infection Control practices, and training needs.”
