Passover begins at sundown Friday and those who celebrate are preparing with traditional kosher foods. In Teaneck, Butterflake Bakery and Pizza Crave bank on customers during the Passover holiday. Butterflake Bakery sees the most customers this time of year and Pizza Crave Restaurant counts on Passover for a boost.
Kosher products are popular in the United States, especially leading up to Passover when sales are estimated at $2.5 billion, according to marketing firm Lubicom. About half of the kosher market is in the New Jersey and New York region, including Teaneck.
“It becomes a very important part of the year…,” said Pizza Crave owner Esther Fire. “Times are a little bit tough for everybody. … The holiday definitely helps.”
The price of kosher foods tend to be more expensive because of special preparation. Butterflake Bakery uses no flour so substitutes like potato starch and matza meal are needed. All goods are also baked in another building.
“We actually bake in another facility because we need a strictly kosher for Passover facility which we keep just for this week’s production,” said Richard Heisler of Butterflake Bakery.
