U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5th) is calling out Teaneck public school officials for inviting a member of the Council on American-Islamic Relations to speak at their school, claiming that the organization supports Hamas.
“It is outrageous and unacceptable to welcome CAIR-NJ into Teaneck’s schools to promote ‘togetherness and belonging’ after its national executive director openly expressed glorification about the vile terrorist attacks and sexual violence perpetrated against innocent Americans, Israelis, and others,” Gottheimer wrote in a letter to the Teaneck superintendent.
In response, the CAIR-NJ chapter has accused Gottheimer of making defamatory and anti-Muslim statements.
Dina Sayedahmed of CAIR-NJ said: “The Congressman’s reaction is very defamatory. It’s very insulting, and it’s a distraction from the work that we need to do as a civil rights organization.”
A spokesperson for Teaneck public schools said: “The only organizations Teaneck schools has partnered with are the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights and Facing History and Ourselves. We feel these groups will facilitate and promote a greater dialogue around differing insights and points of view. Teaneck’s number one priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for all stakeholders.”
