Jersey City officials and community members celebrated the opening of a new shelter on Wednesday that will support people who are homeless. Social services such as assistance with mental health, substance use disorder and more will be offered there.
The shelter, located in a neighborhood between Hoboken and the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, will be across the street from a luxury high-rise building.
“It is very challenging for the government, for the public sector, to build resources like this with our own dollars,” Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop said of the new shelter. “We need to be creative to find solutions, and creative solutions sometimes can be politically tough. It’s been a very long road with a lot of partners in order to achieve this.”
