Demands among pro-Palestinian protesters vary at each university in the U.S., but nearly all have called for some form of divestment from Israel. But while the divestment movement has a long history in this country, the practicality is complicated, especially for higher education institutions.

NJ Spotlight News spoke with Dany Bahar, a senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution, about the prospects. Bahar, also an associate professor at Brown University’s Watson Institute, cited Brown’s corporate board on Tuesday agreeing to meet with student protesters and vote on their divestment proposal.

“Maybe a better call than divestment is to ask universities to invest in the Palestinian territories, for the Palestinians, to increase their opportunities,” Bahar said. “And I think that that’s a very laudable goal, and I don’t see anyone speaking on that.”
