Challengers for the 11th Congressional District hammered issues like soaring inflation and a tough economy in a debate Tuesday night as they push to unseat incumbent Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherill.

Republican candidate Paul DeGroot said the country is off track and needs to reduce spending, cut taxes and relax regulations. DeGroot — a former prosecutor — is running in a district recently redrawn to give Democrats a better advantage. He calls himself a “pro-choice, independent Republican,” and says that abortion is a states’ rights issue. Sherrill shot back, “He believes this is a states’ rights issue. I believe it is a women’s rights issue.”

The debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New Jersey and Drew University, also included Libertarian candidate Joseph Biasco.
