How much would it take to convince you to sell your home and walk away? Thousands of New Jersey residents are pondering that question, including residents of Jordan Road, Woodbridge, who face potential flooding whenever heavy rains fall; they were hit hard in Tropical Storm Ida. When Woodbridge asked homeowners there if they would consider selling their flood-prone houses through New Jersey’s Blue Acres program, many applied.

“We want those people to get to a better place. And we’re willing to support their applications to Blue Acres to get buyouts,” said Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac. New Jersey has spent more than $200 million to buy 775 houses through the Blue Acres initiative over the years. Now the commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Protection wants to give homeowners a greater financial incentive to sell.
