Former President Donald Trump returned to Washington, D.C. Tuesday for the first time since leaving the White House, making it more apparent than ever he plans to launch a 2024 presidential campaign as he addressed the America First Policy Institute Summit. Strategists say that an attempt by him at a political comeback could upend the midterm elections even in a blue state like New Jersey.

Charlie Stile, columnist for the Record of Bergen County, discusses the effect Trump could have on the midterms, particularly for Republican candidates in competitive congressional districts. They’re caught in a bind, Stile said, “because the base still is in thrall of him and still very much supportive of Donald Trump … they can’t live without the base but at the same time they have to appeal to a broader electorate that tends to be more moderate to liberal.”
