Every Friday, starting at 9 a.m., anywhere from 30 people to hundreds walk through Tenafly to raise awareness for Edan Alexander, a Tenafly native, and the other hostages captured by Hamas in its attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

Alexander, a 2022 graduate of Tenafly High School, who served with the Israel Defense Forces, is one of the 100-plus hostages still held by Hamas.

“The world cannot stop thinking about the hostages,” said Judith Goldsmith, one of the walkers. “I email President Biden every day. We have to keep them on the top of our minds.”

The group in Tenafly is a local chapter of Run for Their Lives, a global organization raising awareness of the Israeli hostages. Their walks last for 18 minutes, a symbolic number in Judaism signifying life.

“It’s very heartwarming to see that people are very supportive of it and that are coming out in strong numbers to show their love,” said Ilan Kravic, one of the walkers.
