It’s a historic vote for the labor movement in New Jersey. Led by a group of baristas, Starbucks employees in Hopewell Township on Monday became the first Starbucks store in the state to unionize, voting unanimously to join Starbucks Workers United. It was an uphill battle against aggressive tactics from the top.
No Starbucks store had ever successfully unionized before December. But more Americans support organizing. A Gallup poll from last summer showed 68% of Americans approved of unions and Rutgers professor Todd Vachon says it’s much higher among younger people. Voting results for Starbucks in Summit are due Thursday and for Hamilton on Friday.
