Once a year, the Point-In-Time Survey happens throughout the state and nationwide, trying to determine how many people are homeless or housing-insecure.
The latest survey found the number of those experiencing homelessness increased from last year’s count. A total of 10,267 people were identified as homeless in New Jersey, a 17% increase over the previous year.
Advocates say there’s a lot of work ahead to get the unhoused connected with the help they need. “The sad fact is there’s people out in the woods right now that are almost freezing to death,” said Kevin McKenna, lead overnight facilitator at Just Believe Inc. “There’s people out there in the summertime that are dying from heat stroke. And it’s a sad thing.”
