In New Jersey, 6.1 million people are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Hospitalization numbers are down and so are visits to the intensive care unit. Is a spike in infections possible during the holiday season and how could that impact hospitals that are experiencing staffing difficulties?

Dr. Shereef Elnahal, President and CEO of University Hospital, Newark and former commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health, says that “because we have made so much progress with vaccination in New Jersey, we will hopefully not see as big an increase” this holiday season compared to last year’s. He remains concerned, however, by staffing challenges in hospitals.
