“The buck stops at the top! And I just dont think you’re capable of fixing the problem,” said Republican Assemblyman Hal Wirths (R-Sussex), who tore into Motor Vehicle Commission Chief Administrator Sue Fulton, accusing her of inept management as lawmakers debated the agency’s budget. Wirths and others on the Assembly Budget Committee complained that, despite reforms, some MVC customers wait up to two months to get a new license, and that agency staff members are too often absent.
Fulton said MVC staff is at 60-65% due to COVID-19 and other permitted absences. She said the agency moved most transactions online and performed a record 12 million of them last year. But she said some in-person transactions take more time. Lawmakers urged her to hire more people, expand agency hours, provide all services at every office and ask the governor for pandemic aid money to pay for those upgrades.
