Unsanitary water supplies, unwashed uniforms, fly infestations and moldy cells are among the complaints highlighted in a recent report by the New Jersey Monitor about conditions inside the Mercer County Correctional Facility outside Lambertville. But despite the problems, the facility nevertheless won high marks from a state inspector last year, the report said.
NJ Spotlight News’ Briana Vannozzi spoke with Dana DiFilippo of New Jersey Monitor about her reporting and the systemic issues she found. She explained a history of similar issues in county jails around New Jersey have also raised new concerns about the level of oversight for the jails. Unlike state prisons, there is no independent ombudsperson dedicated to county facilities.
