Hanover school board scraps parental notification policy

Such policies are at the center of debate over parental rights

The Hanover Township Board of Education voted Tuesday night to repeal Policy 5756, a measure that had been in place to prevent schools from outing transgender and nonbinary students to their families.

Such policies are intended to foster more inclusive environments in schools, but have sparked debate statewide about what parents should be notified of. Other districts, including Colts Neck and Millstone, have repealed such policies.

Supporters of the repeals and the larger “parental rights” movement say the move allows parents to be part of the conversation. Opponents argue the move is anti-LGBTQ and eliminates other protections.
