Access to low-cost high-speed internet has been a problem for years in rural and low-income areas in New Jersey and has been made worse by the pandemic. According to the Federal Communications Commission and Microsoft, as of last year, only 44% of households in Sussex County have broadband internet and only 46% of households in Warren County.

New Jersey secured $190 million from the federal American Rescue Plan to expand and improve internet access in the state. But so far, none of those funds have been distributed. U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-5th) explains how he’s been pushing for an immediate release of those federal dollars to expand broadband access to those areas of his district.
