The Garden State Parkway will transition to cashless toll collection, accepting E-ZPass only. The board of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority voted to award a $914 million contract to a Nashville-based company to design and run an all-electronic cashless toll collection system on the parkway. A start date for the new system is a few years away, according to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. The company selected, Transcore, is also building a cashless toll system for the Atlantic City Expressway, which is expected to go cash-free by Memorial Day, 2025.
Officials have yet to decide whether the New Jersey Turnpike will move toward all-electronic toll collections.
Ditching cash shouldn’t be too much of a problem on the parkway, since most drivers aren’t paying with coins anyway. According to the Turnpike Authority, around 90% of parkway and turnpike drivers used E-ZPass last month.
