Fury over proposed new power plant in Newark’s East Ward

Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission wants natural gas power plant as backup energy source

Residents and environmental activists are furious about a proposed plan to develop a new power plant in Newark’s East Ward, just off the Ironbound section. That’s where the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, which processes sewage from dozens of north Jersey communities, wants to protect against future outages when major storms hit by building a new natural gas power plant to provide backup power for its main facility.

The commission’s board meets Wednesday and the utility could take a big step forward to starting construction. But community groups and environmentalists argue a new power plant is the last thing an already heavily polluted neighborhood needs.
