Augusto Acabou, one of two Newark firefighters killed responding to a ship fire in Port Newark last week, was laid to rest Thursday. His funeral at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark’s North Ward was attended by hundreds, including family members, dignitaries, firefighters and other first responders.
Acabou was remembered as a loving son, brother, uncle and friend who made the ultimate sacrifice. Acabou’s family was presented with his helmet and the flag that flew above Engine 16 on the night of the fire; Acabou was assigned to Engine 16. The family was also presented with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol, and city officials posthumously promoted Acabou to captain. The viewing for firefighter Wayne Brooks Jr. is scheduled for Thursday evening. His funeral will be held on Friday morning.
