About a week ago, Wall Street Journal reporter and Princeton native Evan Gershkovich was detained in Russia, while reporting on a story east of the Ural Mountains. Gershkovich worked for the New York Times and Agence France-Presse before joining The Journal to cover Russian culture, business and, later, the war in Ukraine.
On April 18, a Moscow court will hear an appeal from Gershkovich’s lawyers. He’s the first U.S. journalist to be arrested in Russia since the Cold War.
NJ Spotlight News spoke with journalist Jeremy Berke, who became close friends with Gershkovich while attending Bowdoin College, and the two were roommates for two years in Brooklyn after school. Berke has been checking in with Gershkovich’s family during the Passover holiday, as some Jewish people prepare a plate at the Seder table in honor of the journalist.
