Advocacy groups are trying to get the word out about available resources

Tax season officially kicked off at the end of January, and advocacy groups are trying to get the word out about available resources that are often unused — like free help filing your return and a list of new refunds available to New Jersey residents this year.

“We provide tax returns for the community at large. If they make $65,000 or less they can come to Citizen Action and get their taxes done for free, yes for free,” said Naomi Anderson, director of VITA and TCE at New Jersey Citizen Action. “We do state and not only just New Jersey but any states and all states.”

Anderson said it’s critical that residents know about all the tax credit programs available to ensure families obtain tax refunds for their  2022 tax filings. That includes New Jersey’s “Anchor” property-tax relief benefits program, which has an application deadline of Feb. 28.

The deadline for filing taxes and for anyone who owes money is April 18.
