New Jersey’s former top law enforcement official on Thursday took the stand at U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s (D-NJ) federal corruption trial, testifying about phone calls and a meeting he took with the senior senator in 2019.

Former state attorney general Gurbir Grewal is the most prominent official to testify against Menendez so far. In the courtroom, the former attorney general offered key details about the direct conversations he and Menendez had, and what exactly the embattled U.S. senator asked him.

Prosecutors allege Menendez tried to interfere with an insurance fraud case involving businessman Jose Uribe. Uribe is one of the three businessmen indicted in the bribery scheme. He has pleaded guilty and is expected to be a star witness for the prosecution.
